President Ursula von der Leyen marked the first 100 days of the 2024-2029 European Commission, emphasizing its focus on prosperity, security, and democracy amid rapid geopolitical shifts and ongoing global tensions. She reaffirmed Europe’s commitment to openness and stability, highlighting the historic appointment of the first-ever Commissioner for Defence as a crucial response to rising security threats.
Recognizing the urgent need to protect European values in an increasingly transactional global environment, von der Leyen celebrated the approval of the EUR 800 billion REARM Europe package. This initiative is set to strengthen Europe’s defense capabilities and serve as the foundation for a European Defence Union. The plan is also expected to accelerate innovation in critical areas such as AI, quantum computing, satellite networks, and secure communication – the latter which is expected to be achieved through the establishment of the European Critical Communication System (EUCCS).
In response to evolving security threats, the Commission is adopting a preparedness mindset, launching the first-ever Security College to ensure regular updates on threats ranging from cyber risks to foreign interference. Secure communication will be a key element in addressing these challenges, ensuring that Europe maintains strong defenses across multiple domains.
Von der Leyen concluded by reaffirming the Commission’s commitment to swift and decisive action, emphasizing that this is a pivotal moment to build a stronger, more secure, and prosperous Europe.
