New trials of critical communications in Ireland

29 September 2025

Westport, County Mayo — 25 September 2025

EUCCS Preparation team was in Ireland last week to observe live trials of next-generation public-safety communications. The demonstrations tested MCX-based tools for multi-agency collaboration, solutions to extend land-mobile coverage into hard-to-reach areas, and satellite-enabled links designed to provide connectivity where terrestrial networks are absent.

A live maritime scenario featured coastguard responders in a vessel approximately five miles offshore who received a real-time video stream from an aircraft, illustrating how airborne video and resilient links can improve situational awareness and coordination during operations at sea. The practical exercise underlined the operational value of combining MCX services with extended terrestrial coverage and satellite “last-resort” options.

Ireland is running these pioneering tests as part of an effort to strengthen emergency communications and resilience; organisers have said that lessons learned from the trials will be shared with EUCCS Prep partners to inform future deployments and interoperability work across Europe.

The event received media coverage in Ireland, including a short report by RTE on its Six One news and supporting online coverage. A recording of the Westport item is also available via Public Safety Communication Europe.
