24 June 2025
From the opening of CCW 2025 in Brussels, attention was drawn to a major European political initiative: the establishment of a European Critical Communication System (EUCCS).
After the opening remarks by European Commission (EC) Executive Vice-President and DG-CNECT Commissioner Henna Virkkunen on the establishment of the EUCCS, a panel of experts took the stage. The panel included representatives from the EC (Olivier Onidi, DG HOME), industry leader -Magnus Packenforff, Ericsson), and the Ministry of Justice and Security of the Netherlands (Jeroen de Graaf) and a public safety communication operator (Salvator Vella- ASTRID- Belgium). Together, they delivered a keynote presentation on this important European initiative, highlighting the Commission’s ambition to enable a secure and resilient communication network for emergency services and public safety organizations.
The project was prominently featured at our booth in the Partners’ Village, where we had the pleasure of engaging with visitors and exhibitors interested in our project. EUCCS initiative was also represented at the Global Village by DG HOME. This provided us with an excellent opportunity to share insights about our journey, update them on the current stage of the project, and outline our objectives for 2030.
It was also a valuable occasion to meet with our contractors—Airbus, Frequentis, Leonardo, and Teltronic—who were present to showcase their latest innovations. EUCCS Preparation Coordinator David Lund visited the booths of all four contractors, gave interviews, and participated in debates to present the first results from our test-beds.
We also took the opportunity to highlight the successful trial conducted in late May in Sweden. Partners, contractors, and European first responders are working closely together to realize this ambitious project, aiming to provide resilient safety for European citizens by the end of the decade.
On the third day, at the Focus Forums corner, TVC Manager Sanja Holen delivered a presentation on the purpose and progress of EUCCS Preparation. She outlined the European Commission’s strategy under the Protect EU initiative, tracing the ten-year journey from BroadMap to EUCCS preparation, and highlighting the significant progress achieved so far. Looking ahead to 2030, she shared our vision: the implementation of a pan-European network for critical communications, connecting EU Member States and the Schengen area. As part of this ambition, she showcased our current milestone—the interconnection of vendors’ platforms—reaffirming our commitment to delivering operational broadband MCX tools for first responders across the continent, and outlined the next steps involving even greater integration.
EUCCS Preparation is pleased to have participated in this event and remains committed to making Europe a safer place.
